Fishing the Kimberley

The Kimberley region is not only renowned for its breathtaking scenery, it also has a reputation as being one of the best fishing locations in the world. Situated in a unique location where the tropical currents of the Indian Ocean and Timor Sea meet, the waters along the Kimberley coastline offer many different fishing opportunities.

The large tidal rivers and vast mangrove systems are home to some of the most delicious eating fish such as the famous Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon and Mangrove Jack. The mangroves are also where you will get a chance to throw out the pots for catching some big juicy mud crabs.

Pelagic species of fish such as Spanish Mackerel, Queenfish, Black Tuna, Trevally, Cobia and Mangrove Jack all favour the dry season so there will be lots around to try your hand at. There truly is no comparison to fishing in the Kimberley.

Surrounding the archipelago of tropical islands, coral reef systems and jutting headlands are several species of reef fish such as Coral Trout, Bluebone Groper, and a variety of emperors and snappers. The crew will also head out in search of fresh oysters for sunset canapés on the bow of Ocean Dream to top off a brilliant day of fishing and exploring the Kimberley.

With two tides everyday, the coastal environment is constantly changing and it is important to be guided by knowledgeable professionals. Our crew have lived and worked in the Kimberley for many years and will share with you their favourite secret fishing locations. The onboard chef will also prepare all freshly caught fish for the ultimate ocean to table dining experience. It doesn’t get fresher than that!

All fishing rods and tackle are provided on board Ocean Dream and are of excellent quality. You are welcome to bring your own but please check beforehand due to cruises with flight components having luggage restrictions.
