The Kimberley Climate – Embrace the Elements

The Kimberley is known for its tropical climate, with hot and humid days giving way to cool evenings. The average temperature sits between 28ºC – 33ºC, but the weather can vary, especially in the cooler months of July and August when temperatures can drop to 12ºC – 15ºC during the mornings. It’s the kind of place where adventure is in the air and a comfortable outfit can make all the difference.

While daytime excursions might be warm and sunny, the mornings and evenings can be cooler, especially on the water. So, it’s important to pack clothes that are both light and breathable but also practical enough for the slight chill during early morning excursions.

Clothing Essentials – Light, Comfortable, and Ready for Adventure

As you prepare for your Kimberley cruise, think of your wardrobe as the key to embracing the spirit of adventure and comfort in the tropics. The relaxed and informal atmosphere aboard Ocean Dream Charters means you won’t need to worry about formal attire – this is your time to unwind, enjoy the stunning surroundings and focus on the experiences that matter.

Lightweight, Breathable Fabrics

Think cotton and linen for ultimate comfort. These materials will keep you cool when the humidity rises. Shorts, loose t-shirts, fishing or sun shirts, sarongs and light trousers are the foundation of your wardrobe. A light jumper or jacket is great for the cooler mornings and evenings.

Sun Protection

The Kimberley sun is strong and you’ll want to be well-prepared. A wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap, sunglasses, chap stick and long-sleeve shirts for sun protection are must-haves. The SPF 30+ sunscreen and insect repellent provided onboard will ensure you stay protected throughout your journey, but you may want to bring your own if you have sensitivities and zinc if you would like stronger sun protection.

Footwear for Adventure

The Kimberley is rugged and while you’ll be spending time relaxing on the boat, there will be opportunities for exciting shore excursions. Pack comfortable walking shoes with ankle support (such as sneakers) for rocky trails and beaches and water shoes or sandals for the wet landings – a great way to explore the coastline without worrying about getting your shoes wet, something like www.keenfootwear.com.au are a popular option as they cover both. Flip-flops or sandals are perfect for shell grit beaches.

Swimwear

The Kimberley’s crystal-clear waters are an invitation for a swim. Pack at least two sets of swimwear for your fresh water billabong swims or beach stops.

Personal Items – Stay Comfortable and Organized

Medications & Toiletries

Don’t forget any prescription medications, vitamins or personal hygiene products. While we supply the basics in your luxury ensuite bathroom, having your preferred items ensures comfort on board. Ear plugs are recommended if you are sleep sensitive.

Hydration is Key

With the warm temperatures, it’s essential to stay hydrated. A refillable water bottle is provided for every guest.

Sea Sickness Remedies:

If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider bringing remedies such as TravaCalm, Kwells or motion sickness wristbands, though the boat’s stabilisers are excellent and the seas are often calm.

A Journal:

The Kimberley landscapes are truly magical – whether you’re gazing at ancient rock formations or watching dolphins play, you’ll want to capture the moments. A travel journal or sketchpad is the perfect companion.

Fishing & Photography – Capture the Magic

Whether you’re an avid angler or a budding photographer, the Kimberley offers boundless opportunities to engage with nature.

Fishing Gear

We supply all the fishing equipment you need, including premium rods and tackle. If you’re an experienced angler and would like to bring your own gear, you can bring a rod (preferably a 2-piece rod) no longer than 2 metres. You’ll have the chance to fish for barramundi, mangrove jack, fingermark, cod, queenfish and more, so be ready for some thrilling action.

Capture the Memories

The Kimberley is a photographer’s dream, with vibrant sunsets, crystal-clear waters and unique wildlife. Be sure to bring extra camera batteries, memory cards and charging cables. Our crew will also be capturing moments during your trip and you’ll receive a USB with stunning photos of your journey, so you can relive the adventure long after the cruise ends.

Additional Essentials – Ready for Anything

Walking Poles

Whilst most land excursions are short, walking poles are suitable if you are unsteady on your feet. Walking poles are good for going downhill but can hinder going uphill. Because of the rugged terrain and rock formations, hiking can involve going uphill then back down, so having foldable or telescopic poles that can be put away in your backpack are ideal.

Waterproof Cases or Dry Bags

When you’re on an excursion, a waterproof case or drybag will keep your electronics safe from water splashes or sudden downpours.

Small Backpack

A waterproof backpack is essential for carrying your camera, water and sunscreen during excursions. It’ll be your go-to companion as you explore the coast.

Final Tips for Packing

  • Pack Light: Space is limited aboard the vessel, so try to keep things compact. We offer a laundry service if needed, so you don’t have to pack too much.
