If you’re never visited the Kimberley before, nothing can quite prepare for you for the spectacular views and rugged landscape which make up this beautiful part of the world. Before you go ahead and book your Kimberley holidays, you need to make sure you’re visiting the area at the right time so you have the best experience possible. With that in mind, let’s look at the best time of year to visit the Kimberley.
The ‘wet’ and the ‘dry’
The Kimberley is semi-tropical due to its position near the equator which means it stays warm (or hot!) throughout the year. The region has two distinct seasons, the ‘wet’ and the ‘dry’, which offer very different experiences. This can be a little confusing for visitors who are used to four separate seasons!
During the wet season, which runs from November to March, the weather is hot, humid and somewhat unpredictable. At the beginning of the season, spectacular lightning shows are common and you can expect heavy, localised rain. As the season progresses, more rain can appear and flooding is not unusual which means that the Gibb River Road is closed due to sections becoming impassable. While it certainly doesn’t rain every day during the wet season, you can expect a very heavy downpour when it does.
The dry season, which runs from April to October, means beautifully warm days and cooler (sometimes even chilly) nights. There is very little rain, other than the occasional thunderstorm, and all roads are open. The humidity is also less intense during the dry season which makes things a lot more comfortable.
The best time to visit
It probably comes as no surprise that the dry season with its beautiful warm weather is the most popular time to visit the Kimberley area, with June through to August being the most popular months. Compared to the wet season, the dry season offers better access to various areas of the Kimberley due to no risk of flooding. The weather is milder and more enjoyable without the high humidity which many visitors struggle with during the wet season.
The lack of flooding during the dry season also means you’re not restricted with the sights you can visit and, with an experienced guide, you can take full advantage of everything the area has to offer. If you’re looking for Kimberley fishing holidays, don’t think that the dry season means there are less waterways to fish in – the dry season offers perfect fishing weather if you’re a keen angler.
