horizontal falls

You’re spoilt for choice when visiting the Kimberley region when it comes to incredible sights – the untouched landscape is rich with vibrant colours and abundant wildlife and the rugged terrain is offset by flowing waterfalls and pristine beaches. Although it’s very difficult to narrow it down, we’re sharing our top picks for scenic highlights on your Kimberley tours.

1. Horizontal Falls

Horizontal Falls is an incredible natural phenomenon which is on the top of every visitor’s must see list. Located in Talbot Bay, the Horizontal Falls are created by huge tidal movements which pass through narrow coastal gorges to give the effect of a waterfall. For a truly spectacular experience, take a helicopter ride above the falls!

2. Montgomery Reef

Montgomery Reef is a unique spectacle and is famous for its unusual tidal movements. At high tide, you can’t see the reef below the water. However, at low tide the water rapidly drops and it appears as though the reef rises from the ocean. The low tide creates cascading waterfalls surrounding the reef which attracts a range of marine life.

3. Vansittart Bay

Vansittart Bay is a stunning bay which is popular as a fishing destination. It’s also famous for being the site of a WWII DC3 aircraft which was forced to make an emergency landing in 1942 after the pilot became lost. The remains of the aircraft are still at the site.

4. Silica Beach

Located in the famous Buccaneer Archipelago, Silica Beach is one of the most stunning beaches in the region and is made up of pure white silica sand. Accessible only by boat, climb up the sandstone cliffs for stunning photo opportunities or simply relax and cool off in the water.

5. Mitchell Falls

Mitchell Falls is one of the most iconic sights of the Kimberley. These four tiered falls are made up of rugged red rock and pristine, flowing water. Swimming isn’t permitted below the falls due to the potential presence of saltwater crocodiles but there are swimming opportunities at higher levels.

6. King George River

The majestic King George River carves its way through towering sandstone cliffs before flowing off an 80 metre drop into a stunning dual waterfall into the gorge below. The falls are best viewed by boat as they’re inaccessible by vehicle.

7. Ruby Falls

A relatively recent discovery, Ruby Falls is truly one of the hidden gems of the Kimberley. This secluded creek is made up of rugged rocks, freshwater pools and stunning waterfalls. Take the time to explore the falls on foot before cooling off in one of the swimming holes.
