The Kimberley region is not only renowned for its breathtaking scenery, it also has a reputation as being one of the best fishing locations in the world. When it comes to fishing in the Kimberley, it’s likely that you have your eye on some of the big game fish like Barramundi or Threadfin Salmon. Although we admit that they’re a pretty spectacular catch, don’t overlook the equally impressive Kimberley mud crab. Bagging a mud crab is another amazing experience to take away with you and today, we’ll be taking a closer look at mud crabbing in the Kimberley

Introducing the Kimberley mud crab

With their distribution stretching from Shark Bay up to the border of the Northern Territory, mud crabs can be found throughout the Kimberley area and make themselves in areas where they can be sheltered such as estuaries and mangroves. Mud crabs get their name thanks to their habit of burying themselves in mud during the day before coming out at night to hunt for food. One of the most memorable features of mud crabs are their massive claws but don’t be too put off by these – a lot of locals say that the best meat is found in the claws. We should add that not only are mud crabs sought after for their impressive size, they also taste delicious!
There are two species of mud crabs, the green mud crab and the brown crab, which can be found in the Kimberley area. Don’t expect dainty crabs when you take a look at Kimberley muddies for the first time – the brown mud crab can weigh up to 1.5kg while the green mud crab can get up to a whopping 2.5kg.

Bagging a mud crab

Crab pots are the easiest way to coax a mud crab and using fresh bait is the best way to get them interested. Rising and full tide is the best time to give your crab pots a go and they also tend to be forced out of their muddy holes after rain. If you’re lucky enough to find a good-sized crab in your pot, use heavy duty gloves if you’ve never handled mud crabs before to avoid being on the receiving end of a serious nip and grab them from behind so they can’t get to your hands and arms with their claws. The crew aboard your cruise will be able to give you more tips and tricks to give you the best chances of bagging your very own Kimberley crab – you’ll be very popular with the others aboard the vessel if you manage to catch a muddie for dinner!
